You can tell a lot about a person by the life they have lived. As one of very few residents of the County educated at every level of our County school system from Four Seasons Elementary School, Arundel Middle School, Arundel High School to the Anne Arundel Community College, I think I bring an interesting perspective to efforts to improve our school system.
Spending 15 years in Anne Arundel County public schools has given me an appreciation of the challenges of our school administrators and teachers and an understanding of the quality professionals our school system can produce. It has prepared me a life as a successful military officer, attorney and corporate executive.
I am absolutely committed to using the resources of the county government to better the quality of life for school teachers, our most vital resource. I strongly support: - addressing the pay disparity between teachers working in Anne Arundel County and teachers in other Maryland Counties.
- training our teachers and giving them the resources they need.
- making the necessary sacrifices required to fund school maintenance. The half-hearted excuses offered by some that school construction is impossible during tight fiscal times doesn’t make fiscal sense and is bad for our County.
Improving teacher quality of life and school conditions alone won't fully close the achievement gap, as children from middle-class families will continue to have advantages outside of school that put them ahead of their peers from low-income families and healthy students will have advantages that put them ahead of their peers who are less fortunate.
That’s why I am committed to fund high quality early childhood programs for children of all social classes and of all health conditions such as Infants & Toddlers and Moms & Tots.
